Khao Sok Jungle Trekking – Explore Thailand's Ancient Rainforest

Get ready for an incredible adventure! Whether you’re a first-time trekker or an experienced adventurer, the Khao Sok Jungle Trek is a must-do excursion for those looking to dive deep into the heart of Southern Thailand’s most breathtaking wilderness. Operated by Phuket Travel Store, this immersive full-day tour promises unforgettable encounters with nature, from serene river paddling to exhilarating rainforest hikes and cultural temple visits.

Discover the Crown Jewel of Thai National Parks

Khao Sok National Park is often referred to as the crown jewel of Thai National Parks – and for good reason. It boasts one of the world’s oldest evergreen rainforests and is home to a dazzling variety of wildlife. Expect to hear the calls of gibbons echoing through the treetops, while wild elephants and elusive big cats quietly roam the dense foliage. With its towering limestone cliffs, meandering rivers, and thick jungle canopy, Khao Sok is a paradise for wildlife lovers and photographers alike.

Wildlife & Flora Like Nowhere Else

The park is extraordinarily rich in biodiversity, making it one of Thailand’s most ecologically diverse environments. It is home to hundreds of species of birds, mammals, reptiles, amphibians, and countless insects, each playing a vital role in this ancient ecosystem. As you journey through the forest, the symphony of chirping birds, croaking frogs, and rustling leaves sets the stage for an immersive wildlife experience. With the keen eye of your expert local trekking guide, you may encounter rare and shy creatures such as the Dusky Leaf monkey with its expressive eyes and white-rimmed face, or hornbills soaring through the canopy with their distinctive calls. Colorful reptiles, camouflaged among the foliage, often reveal themselves only to those who look closely.

Equally captivating is the plant life. Towering hardwoods, twisted lianas, and fan palms form the jungle’s layered structure, creating a cool, shaded environment teeming with life. Look closely and you might discover carnivorous pitcher plants hiding amongst the underbrush, silently trapping insects, or admire the elegance of endemic wild orchids clinging to moss-covered trunks. For the botanically inclined, one of the park’s most magical and fleeting sights is the Rafflesia arnoldii – the largest flower in the world. This rare and spectacular bloom can reach up to 90 centimeters in diameter and emits a strong scent to attract pollinators. It blossoms unpredictably and only for a few days, making it a true treasure for lucky visitors who happen to witness it in full bloom.

A Comfortable Yet Rewarding Jungle Trek

The trek itself is designed to be accessible to most travelers. It’s a relatively slow-paced four-hour journey through shaded rainforest trails. Aside from a few steeper inclines, the terrain is gentle and suitable for anyone in average physical condition. Halfway through the hike, we stop for a riverside picnic lunch near the picturesque Bang Hua Rat Waterfall. It’s the perfect spot to rest, enjoy a tasty Thai meal, and cool off in the refreshing waters before continuing the adventure.

Scenic Canoe Ride on the Sok River

After your jungle trek, unwind with a relaxing canoe ride along the Sok River. As your paddle guide navigates the gentle currents, you’ll witness dramatic limestone karsts towering above the trees, a scene often hidden from view during the trek. This peaceful stretch of water offers prime opportunities to spot animals drinking along the riverbank, making it a favorite part of the day for bird watchers and photographers alike.

Cultural Experience at Wat Tam Panturat Temple

Before heading back, your day concludes with a memorable cultural visit to Wat Tam Panturat Temple. This peaceful Buddhist temple is perched amidst the jungle and home to a playful troop of monkeys. Watch as they curiously interact with visitors and explore the temple grounds. Beyond their antics, the temple also offers insight into Thailand’s spiritual traditions, adding depth and meaning to your jungle journey.

08.00 AM - 08.30 AM: Hotel Pick-Up from the Khao Lak Area

Begin your day with a convenient hotel pick-up in the Khao Lak area. Your friendly driver and guide will collect you at approximately 8:00 AM in a comfortable, air-conditioned minibus, right at your hotel lobby.

The pick-up time may vary slightly depending on the location of your hotel, but rest assured, we will confirm the exact time when you book your tour with Phuket Travel Store.

Morning Market Visit in Takua Pa

On the way to Khao Sok National Park, we’ll make a brief stop at the Takua Pa morning market — a vibrant hub of local life and an essential part of the Thai economy. These traditional markets offer a firsthand look at the farm-to-table lifestyle that has long been a part of everyday life in Thailand.

You’ll have the chance to browse local market stalls filled with fresh produce, meats, seafood, and delicious prepared Thai dishes. It’s a great opportunity to experience authentic Thai food culture before we continue our journey to the rainforest of Khao Sok.

Guided Jungle Trek in Khao Sok National Park

Embark on an unforgettable jungle trek in Khao Sok National Park with an experienced local guide who will lead you on a 3 to 4-hour hike through the park’s lush and ancient rainforest. Along the way, your guide will point out unique plants and wildlife, offering fascinating insights into this biodiverse ecosystem.

Keep your eyes open for rare mammals, including gibbons, Dusky Leaf monkeys, Spectacled langurs, Barking deer, Malayan tapir, and the elusive Malayan sun bear. Though tigers and two species of leopards still inhabit the park, they are rarely seen due to their elusive nature.

Khao Sok is also a paradise for birdwatchers, home to over 300 bird species, including impressive birds of prey such as the Osprey and the Crested Serpent Eagle. One of the more frequently spotted residents is the Great Hornbill, along with other members of the hornbill family, easily seen due to their large size and distinctive features.

Biodiversity of Khao Sok’s Ancient Rainforest

While encountering wildlife in this vast and ancient rainforest is a highlight of the trek, the real wonder lies in the incredible plant biodiversity that supports and sustains it. The lush vegetation of Khao Sok National Park creates a rich habitat that attracts and shelters a wide range of animal species.

As you walk through the forest, you’ll see vibrant orchids, unusual carnivorous plants, and towering jungle trees with roots clinging to cliffs and mountainsides. These botanical treasures flourish in the park’s humid environment, offering an unforgettable chance to see rare and exotic plant species that most people only encounter in a botanical garden.

Picnic Lunch and Refreshing Break at Bang Hua Rad Waterfall

After a few kilometres of jungle trekking, we’ll arrive at the scenic Bang Hua Rad Waterfall—an ideal spot to take a well-earned break. Surrounded by lush rainforest, the waterfall offers a peaceful setting for a picnic lunch and a chance to relax and recharge.

Enjoy a replenishing Thai-style lunch provided by your guide, and take time to unwind by the cool, clear waters. If conditions allow, you’re welcome to take a refreshing swim in the natural pool. The flow of the falls varies with the seasonal rainfall, but its tranquil beauty remains a highlight of the tour year-round.

Scenic Canoe Journey on the Sok River

Step into a canoe and enjoy a relaxing scenic cruise along the Sok River, guided by your expert local paddle guide. As you drift through the heart of Khao Sok National Park, you’ll pass beneath towering limestone cliffs and through dense rainforest vegetation—areas often inaccessible by foot due to the rugged terrain.

Midway through your river journey, we’ll stop for a unique experience: freshly brewed coffee served in an eco-friendly bamboo cup, right in the middle of nature.

Because your guide does all the paddling, you’re free to fully appreciate the scenery, take in the peaceful sounds of the jungle, and capture stunning photographs of the limestone karsts, jungle canopy, and possibly even some of the elusive wildlife that call this region home. Many of Khao Sok’s animals are well-camouflaged, but your guide’s deep knowledge of the local habitat can help you spot rare creatures that most visitors would miss.

Meet the Monkeys at Wat Tam Panturat Temple

After exploring the wilderness of Khao Sok National Park, enjoy a unique cultural and wildlife experience by visiting the resident monkeys at Wat Tam Panturat Temple. This peaceful Buddhist temple, nestled in the jungle, offers a rare chance to observe monkeys up close in a calm and respectful setting.

Throughout Thailand, temple grounds are known as safe havens where animals—especially curious primates—often find refuge. The monkeys here are friendly and used to visitors, making it a great opportunity for close observation and photography.

Just a word of caution: monkeys are known collectors, especially of shiny objects. We recommend leaving jewelry and valuables such as necklaces and bracelets in the minivan to avoid any unexpected additions to the monkeys’ collection.

06.00 PM - 06.30 PM: Return to Your Hotel in the Khao Lak Area

As your day of adventure winds down, your driver and guide will ensure a safe and comfortable return to your hotel in the Khao Lak area, typically around 6:00 PM.

Though it’s time to say goodbye, we hope your experience in Khao Sok National Park leaves you with unforgettable memories. Thank you for joining us, and we look forward to welcoming you on another journey with Phuket Travel Store soon.

Wonderful experience with elephants!

This was one of the most beautiful trips we've ever made. The elephants really live here species-appropriate - no riding, no coercion, just peace and respect. We could feed them, take them for a walk and experience them up close. The atmosphere was totally relaxed, nothing was overflowing or touristic exaggerated. Also the guides were super friendly and told a lot about the animals and the background of the project. You can tell immediately: Here, the welfare of animals is paramount. For those who love animals and value responsible tourism, this is an absolute must. Thanks to Phuket Travel Store for this special experience!
