Bangkok Thonburi Food and Canal Adventure

Explore Bangkok’s Hidden Side Through Food and Canals

Are you looking for a truly authentic Bangkok experience that goes far beyond the typical tourist trail of temples, tuk-tuks, and shopping malls? Then the Bangkok Thonburi Food and Canal Adventure with Phuket Travel Store is the perfect tour for you. This immersive half-day journey invites you to explore Thonburi, one of Bangkok’s oldest and most culturally rich districts, nestled quietly on the western bank of the Chao Phraya River. Unlike the buzzing skyscrapers and modern chaos of central Bangkok, Thonburi remains refreshingly traditional—where locals still commute by boat, prepare street food from age-old recipes, and live in wooden homes perched above canals.

With the help of an expert local guide, you’ll delve into the culinary heritage of Bangkok while cruising its hidden network of canals aboard a colorful longtail boat. Along the way, you’ll discover daily life along the waterways, encounter exotic wildlife like monitor lizards, and indulge in over ten mouthwatering local dishes that represent the true flavors of Thailand. From breakfast in the historic Talad Phlu Market to a lunch feast at the vibrant Wang Lang Market, this tour is a feast for all your senses. It's not just a food tour—it's a journey through time, tradition, and taste.

Ideal for curious travelers, food lovers, photographers, and those wanting to escape the crowds, this unique Bangkok experience is one of the most rewarding and memorable ways to connect with local culture. Step off the beaten path and experience the real Bangkok—only with Phuket Travel Store.

Discover Thonburi – Bangkok’s Historic West Bank

Thonburi, located just across the Chao Phraya River from Bangkok’s Grand Palace and Old City, was once the capital of Siam. Today, it remains one of the city’s most charming and untouched neighborhoods. Unlike the modern skyscrapers and busy roads of central Bangkok, Thonburi feels like a step back in time. Locals still live in traditional wooden houses on stilts, commute by boat, and grow tropical fruits in small community gardens. It’s a side of Bangkok tourism most travelers never get to see.

This local canal and food tour offers the perfect balance of culture, cuisine, and relaxation—ideal for food lovers, explorers, and photographers alike.

Glide Through Bangkok’s Secret Canals

The highlight of this experience is a scenic longtail boat ride through Bangkok’s canal network, often called the "Venice of the East." As you cruise along peaceful waterways, you’ll pass vibrant neighborhoods, small temples, and local life in action. Look out for fascinating wildlife like monitor lizards sunbathing along the banks and locals paddling small boats loaded with fresh produce.

This slow-paced canal tour gives you a refreshing contrast to the chaos of central Bangkok and offers unbeatable photo opportunities of authentic Thai life.

A Foodie Journey Through Thonburi’s Best Local Eats

But that’s not all. This is also one of the best Bangkok food tours you'll find, designed to showcase hidden gems far from the tourist trail.

We begin in Talad Phlu, often referred to as the "Chinatown of Thonburi." This local market is famous for its traditional Thai-Chinese flavors and early morning energy. You’ll enjoy a Thai-style breakfast, possibly including soy milk, fried Chinese dough (patongko), and strong Thai coffee brewed the old-fashioned way.

From there, we visit multiple food stops across various Thonburi neighborhoods. Each stop features local dishes that are beloved by residents but rarely found in guidebooks. Think herbal soups, crispy snacks, fragrant curries, and refreshing herbal drinks made from flowers and tropical herbs.

Lunch at Wang Lang Market – A Street Food Paradise

The tour ends with a late lunch at Wang Lang Market, one of Bangkok’s best-kept culinary secrets. Tucked next to Siriraj Hospital, this bustling riverside market is a street food heaven where vendors serve hundreds of local dishes daily. You'll sample everything from savory curries and grilled meats to sweet coconut desserts and fresh seasonal fruits.

If you love trying authentic Thai street food, Wang Lang is the place to be.

09.00 AM: Meet Your Guide at BTS Talat Phlu Station

Your journey begins at the conveniently located BTS Talat Phlu Station, where you'll meet your friendly, licensed local guide. From here, you’ll hop into a local minibus for a short ride deep into the Thonburi district—Bangkok’s historic west side. This hidden neighborhood is where your off-the-beaten-path adventure starts. As you leave behind the concrete jungle, you’ll immediately notice the atmosphere shift into something more peaceful and authentic.

Traditional Street Food Tasting in Talat Phlu

Arriving in Talat Phlu, you’ll dive straight into Bangkok’s legendary food culture. Begin your morning with a delicious Thai-style breakfast, featuring Chinese chive dumplings, a rich and savory beef noodle soup, and a rotating selection of local snacks that vary by season and vendor. As you walk through a traditional Thai temple, your guide will explain the neighborhood’s cultural roots. Then, continue on foot to a second bustling wet market, where you’ll stop for freshly brewed Thai coffee and crispy Chinese fried dough (patongko)—a classic pairing among Thai locals.

Longtail Boat Cruise Through Thonburi’s Canal Network

Board a traditional longtail boat and drift through Thonburi’s serene and scenic canals, a rare view of Bangkok where daily life still unfolds on the water. Wooden stilt houses, small temples, and lush greenery line the canals, offering a peaceful escape from the usual city chaos. Your boat journey includes a special stop at the Artist House (Baan Silapin), a unique riverside art gallery and cultural hub. After enjoying the artwork and a riverside coffee, head nearby for a delicious local tasting of river prawns in spicy red curry and a comforting bowl of peppery rolled noodle soup with pork organs—two rich dishes that truly reflect Bangkok’s deep culinary traditions.

Iconic River Views and Local Lunch at Wang Lang Market

Rejoin the river and cruise along the mighty Chao Phraya River, passing by some of Bangkok’s most iconic landmarks. Snap photos of the Grand Palace and the stunning Wat Arun (Temple of Dawn) from a riverside perspective. The boat docks at Wang Lang Market, one of Bangkok’s best-kept secrets and a true street food paradise. Here, you’ll sit down for a hearty lunch at a beloved Isaan-style restaurant, where you’ll get to taste spicy som tum (papaya salad), grilled marinated chicken, sticky rice, and other delicious Northeastern Thai favorites. It’s a feast that will leave you satisfied well into the evening.

A Sweet Finish – Traditional Thai Dessert by the River

Wrap up your Thonburi food journey with a delightful local dessert: tapioca threads served in iced coconut milk syrup. This cooling treat is a Thai favorite, offering a sweet, creamy finish that perfectly balances the rich and spicy flavors from earlier in the tour. It’s especially refreshing after a flavorful lunch and a warm day exploring Bangkok’s neighborhoods and waterways.

02.00 PM: Tour Ending at Wang Lang Pier – Return or Explore More

After dessert, your guide will escort you to Wang Lang Pier, where you'll receive clear instructions on how to board the riverboat back to the BTS Skytrain for your return journey. If you’d like to continue exploring, the Grand Palace and Wat Arun Temple are just a short boat ride away. You’re free to unwind or continue sightseeing at your own pace, but one thing is certain—this adventure will leave you with lasting memories of Bangkok’s authentic charm.

Ayutthaya

We would like to thank the Phuket Travel Store, especially Sunee for organizing some of our tours in Thailand. The team was really professional and we always had quick replies to our queries. We visited the Palais Royal de Bang Pa-In, in Ayutthaya the Wat Maha That and had a boat tour back to Bangkok with lunch. Our guide was kind and knowledgeable, we had a great day. Everything went well apart from the French guide not being available resulting in last minute changes and the boat/van not being completely wheelchair adapted. With help it was possible. I suggested either a car with a big booth for manual wheelchair users or a van with wheelchair ramp. Thank you for improving accessibility.
