Bangkok Keeping The Roots Tour – Discover Hidden Stories
Bangkok is a city of contrasts — soaring skyscrapers rise beside ancient temples, luxury malls buzz just streets away from crumbling wooden shophouses. But tucked away in this bustling metropolis lies another Bangkok — a quieter, older, and deeply human one. This is the Bangkok that “Keeping the Roots” invites you to explore.
This tour began with a simple idea: to give voice to the people who built this city — the canal dwellers, the craftspeople, the storytellers, and the spiritual guardians of local culture — whose lives are deeply rooted in places tourists rarely see.
As Bangkok rapidly modernized in recent decades, many traditional communities were displaced, their homes and livelihoods threatened by unchecked urban development. Gleaming condominiums replaced canals, and cookie-cutter cafés replaced corner noodle stalls. In this transformation, the city’s soul began to fade — not in headlines or maps, but in the quiet disappearance of neighborhoods where generations once lived together, shared rituals, and held tightly to their identity.
“Keeping the Roots” is a response to that loss — and a celebration of what still remains.
This half-day cultural journey takes you from the vibrant chaos of Chinatown, with its fusion of Chinese and Thai heritage, through Bangkok’s most intricate network of back alleys. You’ll discover shrines hidden behind food stalls, families who have lived in the same alley for generations, and murals that tell the unspoken stories of survival and adaptation.
Crossing the river by private longtail boat, you’ll enter Thonburi, the old capital of Thailand and a district still deeply anchored in community life. Here, among the Portuguese quarters, Buddhist temples, and Muslim wooden villages, you’ll walk into homes where grandparents still pass down traditional knowledge, see ancestral altars still lovingly tended, and witness how neighbors unite around creativity and resourcefulness to preserve their way of life.
The tour was born from long-standing relationships with these communities. It was co-created with the very people it aims to support. Elders open their homes not as tourist attractions, but as spaces of memory. Youth leaders share their grassroots sustainability projects. A boatman recounts how his father once rowed across the same canals you now travel.
Each stop is intentional — not just to show, but to listen, learn, and connect. It’s a story about heritage under pressure, but also about resilience, reinvention, and hope.
What is the Bangkok Keeping the Roots Tour?
Unlike typical sightseeing tours, Keeping the Roots is a thoughtfully designed Bangkok walking and boat tour that sheds light on local lives along ancient maritime trade routes stretching from the heart of Chinatown to the historic Thonburi district. It's a short version of the Bangkok Three Sixty tour, focusing specifically on people, communities, and the cultural fabric that’s often overlooked in mainstream tourism.
On this intimate experience, you’ll navigate a fascinating blend of narrow alleyways, hidden shrines, canal-side villages, and creative urban initiatives — all while learning how these resilient neighborhoods are preserving their identities in the face of Bangkok’s rapid modernization.
Highlights of the Experience
- Walk through Bangkok’s oldest communities between Chinatown and the Grand Palace precinct
- Explore Thonburi’s Portuguese quarter and multicultural legacy
- Visit Bangkok’s most intricate maze of back alleys, teeming with local life and character
- Gain rare insights into the dynamics of a city in transition — from ancient trades to modern creativity
- Enjoy a private longtail boat tour through scenic canals (khlongs) of Thonburi

A Journey Through Bangkok’s Vernacular Heritage
While Bangkok dazzles with golden temples and luxury malls, its vernacular heritage — the ordinary buildings, markets, and homes of everyday people — is often ignored or destroyed. Keeping the Roots brings attention to this disappearing side of Bangkok, offering you the opportunity to:
- Engage with local families and community leaders
- Visit humble places with rich oral histories
- Learn about cultural conservation, urban change, and grassroots innovation
- Support local entrepreneurs and community-based tourism
This tour is not just about observing — it’s about participating, understanding, and contributing.
The Route – From Chinatown to Thonburi by Foot and Boat

Expect to visit:
- A century-old family home still standing strong
- A heritage craft workshop
- Local street food spots tucked in hidden corners
- A private canal cruise past stilt houses, shrines, and waterside daily life

Customer Testimonials
Ayutthaya
We would like to thank the Phuket Travel Store, especially Sunee for organizing some of our tours in Thailand. The team was really professional and we always had quick replies to our queries. We visited the Palais Royal de Bang Pa-In, in Ayutthaya the Wat Maha That and had a boat tour back to Bangkok with lunch. Our guide was kind and knowledgeable, we had a great day. Everything went well apart from the French guide not being available resulting in last minute changes and the boat/van not being completely wheelchair adapted. With help it was possible. I suggested either a car with a big booth for manual wheelchair users or a van with wheelchair ramp. Thank you for improving accessibility.
Fantastic experience
Fantastic to deal with. We had a great time on all the tours. Very well organised and best informative and responsive
Catamaran trip to Similan Islands
I booked the Similan Islands tour to do on my birthday whilst on holiday in Phuket. The booking was well managed with all my questions answered quickly and my booking confirmed easily. It was a brilliant day and very well organised.
