Bangkok Bizarre Food Challenge

The Bangkok Bizarre Food Challenge by Phuket Travel Store is a one-of-a-kind food tour designed for those who crave exotic Thai cuisine and unforgettable local experiences. On this guided adventure, you’ll visit hidden eateries and hole-in-the-wall restaurants known only to locals — places that serve dishes you won’t find on typical tourist menus.

Throughout the tour, you’ll taste rare and unusual Thai foods that are considered strange even by many locals — yet are secretly beloved by those with bold tastebuds.

While these foods might sound intimidating, they are full of flavor, rooted in tradition, and a true reflection of Thailand’s deep culinary diversity. Each stop offers an opportunity to learn about Thai food culture, regional ingredients, and how locals enjoy these bold flavors.

But this tour isn’t just about the food — it’s also about the journey! You’ll get to travel around the city using local transportation for a fully immersive experience. From a scenic Chao Phraya River ferry ride, to hopping in a colorful Tuk Tuk, and boarding a local train to Sam Saen, every leg of the tour connects you to the real rhythm of Bangkok life.

Whether you’re a food blogger, cultural explorer, or simply love trying new things, this weird food tour in Bangkok is a must. It’s a mix of food exploration, local travel, and plenty of laughter as you step outside your comfort zone and into the flavors of Thailand’s wildest dishes.

The Bangkok Bizarre Food Challenge ends at Saphan Kwai BTS Skytrain Station, making it easy to continue your journey or head back to your hotel.

🚉 Start Your Food Journey at Saphan Taksin BTS

The adventure begins at Saphan Taksin BTS station, one of the most accessible meeting points in Bangkok. From here, your guide will lead you onto a public ferry cruising up the historic Chao Phraya River, offering scenic views of riverside temples, houses, and the real life of Bangkok locals.

🍜 First Stop: Pig or Cow Blood Noodle Soup

Your first bizarre bite awaits at Wang Lang Pier, a lively neighborhood known for its authentic food stalls. Here, you’ll try pig or cow blood noodle soup, a savory broth rich in spices and flavor, thickened with congealed animal blood. It's a delicacy that locals love and an essential challenge for the daring eater.

🐟 Issan Cuisine: Fermented Fish & Spicy Meat Salad

A short walk brings us to a Northeastern Thai (Isaan) restaurant, where the dishes get even bolder. You'll be introduced to Pla Ra — fermented fish known for its strong smell and umami punch. If you’re brave, try the Larb Luat, a spicy minced meat salad made with raw pork and fresh blood. Both dishes are spicy, intense, and deeply traditional.

🚖 Tuk Tuk Ride to Pig Brain Ball Restaurant

We cross the river again to Maharaj Pier, where Tuk Tuks — Bangkok’s iconic three-wheeled taxis — take us to a restaurant that specializes in pig brain balls. Don’t let the name scare you; these creamy, rich morsels are packed with flavor and paired with herbs and rice. You might also have the chance to taste Thai-style liver sausages, both sweet and savory.

🚂 Ride the Train to Sam Saen

After refueling, we hop on a train from Hua Lamphong Station and travel like a local to Sam Saen, a lesser-known Bangkok neighborhood where more surprises await.

🐸 Deep-Fried Frog Skin, Basil Frog, & Mackerel Heads

At our fourth food stop, the menu turns crispy and crunchy. Try deep-fried frog skin, surprisingly light and addictively crisp. The stir-fried frog with basil leaves is a spicy, aromatic dish with a flavor that rivals any meat. And for the brave, we offer deep-fried mackerel heads, a crunchy delicacy with crispy cheeks and salty-sweet seasoning.

🐔 Chicken Feet Soup & Grass Jelly Dessert

The tour wraps up with chicken feet soup, a spicy, herbal broth popular in Thai street food culture. You’ll be amazed how much flavor and collagen a chicken foot can offer. Finally, cleanse your palate with a refreshing grass jelly dessert in syrup — a traditional Thai sweet with cooling properties.

We end our food adventure at Saphan Kwai BTS Station, from where you can easily return to your hotel or continue exploring Bangkok.

🚶 Travel Mode: Local and Immersive

This tour uses multiple forms of local transportation — walking, Tuk Tuk, river ferry, and train — giving you a truly immersive Bangkok experience. You’ll navigate bustling neighborhoods, lively food stalls, and vibrant markets like a true Thai.

⚠️ Important Note

Wonderful experience with elephants!

This was one of the most beautiful trips we've ever made. The elephants really live here species-appropriate - no riding, no coercion, just peace and respect. We could feed them, take them for a walk and experience them up close. The atmosphere was totally relaxed, nothing was overflowing or touristic exaggerated. Also the guides were super friendly and told a lot about the animals and the background of the project. You can tell immediately: Here, the welfare of animals is paramount. For those who love animals and value responsible tourism, this is an absolute must. Thanks to Phuket Travel Store for this special experience!
